Cycling Coaching for Busy Parents
Brian Vigue, 54, had a strong sporting background before we started working together. He raced as a junior, completed a Half Ironman in 2012 and had only been back on the bike for around 18 months when we began coaching. His goals were to get back in shape, prepare for events including the Dairyland Dare and Trek 100, and feel strong enough to enjoy fast group rides again. The challenge was making that training work around a very busy job, regular work travel and two young children. For Brian, cycling coaching for busy parents needed to provide structure without pretending that training could always come first. The plan had to work around the rest of his life rather than constantly competing with it.
A big part of the coaching was taking the time to understand Brian as an individual and building the programme around all of those competing demands. He particularly valued having structure back in his training and knowing there was a reason behind what he was doing rather than simply trying to squeeze in as much riding as possible.
The impact went well beyond his own riding. Brian felt like a cyclist again and said he had not been this fit since he was 15. He also reported that his Type 2 diabetes was being managed better than ever, while cycling became something his whole family could share — his wife and his 10- and 15-year-old sons now ride with him. He has even taken lessons from his own coaching experience into his son’s mountain-bike practice.
For Brian, cycling coaching for busy parents was about creating enough structure to make genuine progress without expecting work or family life to disappear. The result was not just better fitness, but feeling connected to cycling again and helping make the sport part of family life.
