Cyclocross Coaching
Meet Joe, a competitive cyclist with around 12 years of racing experience across road, track and mountain biking. When cyclocross became his focus, he wanted coaching that would help him improve without taking time away from his family. With a toddler at home and a demanding job, that meant finding a way to make cyclocross coaching work around real life.
Joe came to me looking for meaningful gains with limited time to train. We built a structured plan he could complete before his family woke up. That gave him a way to train consistently without disrupting the time he spent with his family. Six months later, his FTP had increased by around 10%, and he felt stronger and more confident when he needed an extra kick on the bike.
As we prepared for his first cyclocross season together, the initial goals were podiums at a few key races and competitive performances across two Pacific Northwest series. Halfway through the season, Joe was performing beyond those expectations. We adjusted the goals, and he went on to win both series.
Joe describes the combination of structure and adaptability as an important part of working together. He knows why each workout is in his plan, but the plan can also change when his performance calls for a new target. His season was a good example: we started with goals that felt ambitious, then responded to the progress he was making rather than sticking rigidly to the original targets.
He also talks about the value of support when a workout feels difficult or doesn’t go as expected. Instead of treating those sessions as failures, we look at what they tell us and keep moving forward. That approach has helped Joe stay motivated and focused through the demands of training, work and family life.
As he heads into a second cyclocross season with me, Joe says he is still making gains and his FTP is still rising. Balancing cyclocross training with work and family commitments?
