FTP improvement goals
David Philipp, 34, was still relatively new to cycling when we started working together, having taken up the sport during lockdown. With a demanding job, two very young children and a background in professional judo, he wanted FTP improvement that could help him get stronger on the bike without expecting his life to revolve around training.
David’s goals were straightforward: improve his FTP, build overall fitness, lose a little weight, keep up more comfortably with his riding friends and improve his Richmond Park personal best. He was also interested in exploring time trials in the future.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was making meaningful progress around a very busy life. Rather than relying on a rigid schedule, the coaching needed to be flexible enough to move with work and family commitments while still giving every session a clear purpose. David particularly valued having someone available to answer questions, adjust the plan when needed and keep the training moving in the right direction.
The results came quickly. In just four months, David’s FTP increased to 301 watts — an 8.1% improvement. His sprint power rose to 1,113 watts, his one-minute power increased to 644 watts, and his 60-minute power improved to 276 watts.
For David, FTP improvement wasn’t simply about chasing a bigger threshold number. It was about becoming a stronger, more capable cyclist across a wide range of efforts while building a training routine that could realistically fit around work and family life.
