Time Trial Training
Tom Becker, 41, didn’t come into coaching with a major cycling background. He had been a keen surfer when he was younger and did a lot of running in his 30s, but cycling became the next challenge. His goals included the 6-12-24 World Time Trial Championships and Revolve24, so time trial training became the focus of the programme.
The challenge was making that preparation work around a young daughter and a very busy, physically demanding job. With limited energy and time available outside work and family, the training needed to be focused enough to produce results without simply relying on more volume.
Tom particularly valued the help with setting clear goals, being able to adapt the training plan in real time and getting quick answers when questions came up. That flexibility meant the programme could respond to what was actually happening in his life rather than expecting every week to unfold exactly as planned.
That approach delivered a major result: Tom finished second in the 6 Hour World Time Trial Championships. For someone balancing endurance preparation with a demanding physical job and family commitments, it was a great example of what can happen when training is specific, consistent and realistic.
For Tom, time trial training wasn’t about trying to squeeze as many hours as possible into the week. It was about using the time he had effectively, preparing for the specific demands of long time trials and having a plan that could adapt when life changed.
