Ultra Endurance Training

Mark Beaumont, 38, already had one of the most extraordinary endurance records in cycling when we started working together. His achievements included the fastest circumnavigation of the world by bicycle — 18,000 miles in 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes — an hour record on a Penny Farthing, and the first bicycle ascent and descent of the world’s highest volcano at 6,893 metres. For an athlete operating at that level, ultra endurance cycling training had to be highly specific while still fitting around a very busy life.

Mark’s schedule included work as a presenter for GCN, ambassador commitments with Shimano and Argon18, a desk job as an investor and a young family. The challenge was not finding more things for him to do on the bike; it was bringing structure back into his training and making sure the work he was doing supported the next expedition, race or record attempt.

The coaching focused on creating that structure while keeping enough flexibility for an unpredictable calendar. Mark particularly valued the accountability, having someone to talk through challenges with and being able to reset the plan quickly when work, travel or family commitments changed what was possible.

The results included setting a 39 hour 40 minute Land’s End to John O’Groats relay record with James Lowsley-Williams and winning GBDuro, a 2,000 km gravel race spanning the length of Britain in which only 14 of 60 starters finished in the General Classification.

For Mark, ultra endurance cycling wasn’t about proving he could ride a very long way — he had already done that many times over. The value was in giving an exceptional endurance athlete the structure, accountability and adaptability needed to keep performing across very different projects, from gravel racing to world-record attempts.

Taking on an ultra-endurance cycling event, record attempt or another challenge where the demands go far beyond a standard training plan? I can help you build a personalised approach around the event, your experience and the rest of your life.
